History of Women’s Breasts

In pre-historic European communities were pictures of women with oversized breasts normally. A familiar example is the Venus of Willendorf, one of many images with wide hips and large breasts. Objects as sacred statues, bowls and sculptures depicted with breasts out, tribes from around 15,000 BC. across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Many female divine figures were associated with breasts and breast milk. In images of the Phoenician goddess Astarte was depicted as a pillar of the breasts. Isis, an Egyptian goddess who was among others to perfect motherhood, was often depicted as a pharaoh gave breastfeeding. Congenital Abnormalities

Abnormalities in the Breast

Non-congenital abnormalities
Inflammation: a woman’s breasts may become inflamed after a serious injury or bruising, or infection with a bacterium. More often happens that a milk gland in one of the two breasts inflamed when a woman breastfeeding (mastitis puerperalis). The intense inflammation can be painful with high fever, pain and abscess formation.

Cysts: These are fluid-filled cavities in the chest, which can be painful and can feel like a lump.
Fibroadenoma: these are benign lumps in the breast, which can be painful.
Fibrocystic breast changes is an exception where the coarser structure of the breast, sometimes with pain.

Malignant abnormalities

Functions of the Breast

  • Breastfeeding baby

The main function of the milk glands in the female breast is feeding the baby with milk. During lactation the milk flowing from the milk glands corridors through milk to the nipple. Milk production is influenced by the hormone prolactin. This hormone prepares the breasts during pregnancy even before the new job they will have given birth: the influence of prolactin, the quantity of milk in the breast tissue is greater. When a baby sucks the nipple, or sometimes even when the mother hears her baby cry, the hormone oxytocin is released into the body of the mother. This squeezes the muscle surrounding the milk glands to contract, allowing the milk to the nipple forthcoming. Both small and large breasts tend to produce enough breast. The interaction between mother and baby adjusts the amount of milk produced per day, usually just to the needs of the baby.

  • Sexual function

Many men find attractive and female breasts may become sexually aroused by seeing or touching of breasts. There are therefore special clothes and underwear designed to emphasize the breasts. Bikini models are also popular by the fact that these men excited. Women may also be sexually aroused by the fact that their partner during sexual contact stimulates the breasts. These facts could explain that during the evolution of female breasts developed.

Breast Development

At birth, both girls and two boys nipples and a very small amount of breast tissue. This can be done by boys and girls and this phenomenon is called witch’s always milk and naturally. During puberty a girl’s breasts begin to grow, while they go through different stages. The breasts grow by adding more fat and arises because the milk gland tissue will develop. When a woman is pregnant for the first time, there is still a developing place in the breasts to prepare them for their role in feeding the baby. The breasts are usually higher during pregnancy.

Silicone & Breast Cancer

Possible link between silicone and cancer

A rare form of non-Hodgkin’s cancer in the breast is more common in women with silicone implants. That letter from the Amsterdam Cancer Institute researchers in the international medical journal JAMA. It is a very rare form of cancer in the breast is not breast cancer. Per one million women with silicone implant according to the researchers get one to three women per year to the disease.

Small risk

In the Netherlands, about 300,000 women with silicone implant. The researchers themselves do not worry, just because the risk of the cancer type is so small. In the 1994-2006 period is eleven of the 389 women with lymphoma (a malignant tumor of the lymphatic tissue) in the chest, this rare form of non-Hodgkin’s cancer. Five of these eleven women had a silicone implant.
